This is skipping where I used the table saw to cut a slot into the vertical pieces. Then glued the bottom down and slid the slats into the risers. Each of them have a pocket screw holding them into place, so it could take a little one pushing and pulling on the table. In the end, this perfectly fits into the bracing of the table top. After this looked good, I repeated the process and made 3 more. It was about here that Kathryn asked if I could make shelves. So, I got these 4 in place, and then finished them off with a back and bottom for each side. It was a little tricky to measure how long the back piece should be. I used to love stacking dominoes as a kid, so I used those mad skills to balance the pieces on their end and measure. I drilled pocket holes in all but one of these boards. This way I could easily attach them to the board beneath it. I also drilled 3 pocket holes on the bottom of the base board, so it could attach to the back board. For the prototype, I didn’t miter the bottom piece to be flush with the base, but I did in the subsequent builds. I only routed three sides on purpose. I want to stagger the side planks to give this a more interesting corner. So each band around the box will appear a bit “shifted.” I also figured out pretty quickly that this was going to be a “paint it” build since Kathryn prefers to not see heads of screws. Well, I did a great job of measuring out the inner supports to fit in the box. I completely forgot to account for the width of the wood around the outside of the box. Also, Kathryn promptly told me this thing was WAY to big for a countertop un-paper towel holder. Since Mom had said his chair seat was 22” square, I went with 21” wide for the board. I figured this would still be plenty wide enough, while still having enough “fudge factor” around Mom’s number. So, a lot has happened between these. First, I got the middle slats planed and cut out the corners with a jig saw. I then decked the lower level to make a shelf. Next, I moved back to fixing my earlier mistake of making the top rail a smidge skinny. I ripped down some more pine fence pickets and made an inner support rail. I secured it to the main 2x4s and to the existing 1x1 rail.
